Designing API changes that partners can plan around

Sudden breaking changes redistribute time and risk. A minimum viable policy pairs deprecation windows with usage telemetry so partners see their own exposure, not only your blog post. Communicate the user-facing reason — search quality, fraud prevention, privacy — in the same document as the technical delta. Mixed messages invite conspiracy theories on forums and more support tickets than the change itself. When you cannot offer a long window, compensate with migration tooling or office hours. The economics here are reputational as much as contractual: complements invest when they believe the platform internalizes their planning horizon.
